Dyes Produced In Nature
When the average person thinks of natural dyes, plants are probably the first source that comes to mind. Indigo or woad for brilliant blues, madder for reds, mimosa hostilis for purple and not to mention the countless sources of yellow in your own backyard.
Many find it surprising that an entire rainbow of natural dyes can be created with mushrooms alone. You can achieve vibrant reds to deep blues, greens, and purples but some of our favorite colors derived from mushrooms are the chocolate browns and sunny yellows.
Lichen can produce dyes a couple diffrent ways. The first is with a simple water extraction which will often produce yellows. The second method requires a long fermentation process in an ammonia solution which can result in bright pinks, reds, maroon, magenta and even purple!
